History

The South Bay Boardriders Club’s Big Wave Challenge began in the winter of 2011. The event was created as a fun, community based way to reward the surfer who rode the largest wave of the winter. While new categories have been added over the years the rules have remained the same; the guy who rides the biggest wave and submits a photo of it wins. The Big Wave challenge has run every year except the winter of 2014-2015. The waves never got that big that winter and in an effort to protect the integrity of the event the “Triple Overhead” minimum wave height requirement was created and the event was postponed that year. The Big Wave Challenge and The Big Wave Challenge Awards party have become staples of the South Bay surf community.

The Big Wave Challenge is a friendly competition to see who can ride the biggest wave of the winter and submit a photograph or video of the ride. The Big Wave Challenge is open to all surfers, on any wave ridden in the South Bay between November 1, 2017 and March 31, 2018. Winners of each of the five categories will be awarded at the Big Wave Challenge awards party on April 27 2018 at the Hermosa Beach Community Center.
